Water Supply
Access to safe drinking water is a human right. However, millions of people in Afghanistan do not have access to safe water due to the intensification of drought in recent years. As a result, people use water that is contaminated with pathogens and majority of them, especially, children suffer from diseases such as cholera and diarrhea. WASH is one of the key thematic areas of CAWC. We have implemented more than 20 WASH projects in various provinces by constructing water supply networks to provide appropriately sited and safe water and build healthier and more resilient communities. These water networks are fed through the existing springs’ water and also new water wells that are dug in the targeted villages. To improve the sustainability of projects, we engage community members in the design, and implementation of projects, create WASH communities, and train them for the maintenance of water supply networks. Our work in WASH projects involves hardware and software approaches. In the hardware approach, we build WASH infrastructures such as water supply networks, and household and communal latrines. In the software approach, we conduct hygiene awareness sessions to improve people’s knowledge of good sanitation and hygiene practices
